Bab Mansour in Meknes Morocco: places to travel in morocco

Best Places to Travel in Morocco.

As a Moroccan who has traveled extensively, I can tell you Morocco offers a diverse range of experiences – breathtaking deserts, vivid cities, ancient medinas (ancient towns), and long coastlines. This country has everything, whether you’re seeking adventure, culture, or relaxation. Below, I have highlighted the best places to travel in Morocco, making sure they’d make your visit to Morocco memorable and successful.

Marrakech

Marrakech (I know, you’ve heard of it before), also known as the “Red City,” is the heart of Moroccan tourism, with millions of tourists yearly. Its old medina, long and rich history, and the old-style souks (Traditional old market) make it a must-visit. You can explore Jemaa el-Fna, a square alive with storytellers, musicians, and market vendors. And visit landmarks like Bahia Palace or the Saadian Tombs. If you want to unwind, the beautiful Majorelle Garden is so perfect. Like the nearby Atlas Mountains, Marrakech is the gateway to day trips and Sahara Desert tours.

Chefchaouen

One of the places to travel in Morocco is Chefchaouen. Known as the “Blue City,” Chefchaouen is located in the Rif Mountains in northern Morocco and is famous for its blue-painted streets. Walking there feels like a dream. It’s also a photographer’s paradise and offers a peaceful break from the hustle of Morocco’s larger cities. Explore artisanal shops or hike nearby natural spots like Akchour Waterfalls to escape into nature (which I do every time I go there).

Fez

Fez, often called Morocco’s spiritual and cultural heart, has a long history dating back to the 8th century. The Fez el-Bali is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the largest car-free urban areas globally. You will find yourself lost in a labyrinth of tight streets, tanneries, and traditional souks while feeling the city’s deep-rooted cultural significance. Don’t miss a visit to Al Quaraouiyine, one of the oldest universities in the world, and the Chouara Tannery.

Sahara Desert

No trip to Morocco is complete without visiting the Sahara Desert. The vast dunes of Erg Chebbi near Merzouga are the most famous. Here, you can camel trek, spend the night in a Berber camp in the desert, and witness astonishing sunrises and sunsets over the dunes. This desert experience connects to Morocco’s nomadic Berber history, making it both breathtaking and culturally enriching.

Essaouira

For a laid-back coastal vibe, head to Essaouira. This seaside town is known for its blue and white buildings, the old medina, and the very relaxed atmosphere. It’s great to enjoy fresh seafood, stroll along the ramparts, or relax on the beach. The city’s art scene and annual Gnaoua World Music Festival add cultural depth to its laid-back vibe.
