Day 1: Fes to Merzouga – Across the Middle Atlas

Leave Fes early and climb into the Middle Atlas. The first stop is Ifrane, a small town of alpine houses and manicured gardens set among cedar forests. Barbary macaques gather around an ancient, 800‑year‑old cedar here, wild, curious, and quick. A short break, a few photos, and you continue south.

The road winds through the Ziz Valley, past palm groves and fortified villages, until the landscape flattens into the pre‑Saharan plains. By late afternoon you reach Merzouga and check into a boutique hotel at the edge of the dunes. Dinner is medfouna, a stuffed Berber flatbread baked in a clay oven, a regional specialty. Sleep comes early, with the silhouettes of sand just beyond the window.

Day 2: Merzouga – Nomads, Oasis & Deep Sahara

Breakfast is Moroccan: mint tea, fresh bread, msemen pancakes, olives, honey, and soft cheese. The morning is spent exploring Merzouga, you’ll visit nomadic families who still move with the seasons, learn how the dunes were formed, and walk through a palm oasis where date groves thrive around a freshwater spring.

If you want more adrenaline, your guide can arrange a quad or 4×4 ride across the sand. After lunch back at the hotel, pack a small overnight bag. In the late afternoon you mount a camel and ride into Erg Chebbi, the sea of orange dunes stretching to the horizon. The trek takes about an hour and a half, arriving at a deep‑desert camp as the sun sets. Dinner is a slow‑cooked tagine around the fire. Sleep in a canvas tent or under the stars, wrapped in blankets with the quiet of the Sahara around you.

Day 3: Merzouga to Dades – Gorges & Kasbahs

Wake before dawn to climb a dune and watch the sunrise. After a granola snack, ride your camel back to the hotel for a proper breakfast and a shower. Then you head west.

The road climbs to the Todra Gorge pass. Below, the river cuts through a canyon 300 metres deep, lined with palm groves. You’ll stop for lunch at a riverside café, if you’re brave, dip your feet in the cold mountain water. In the afternoon, the drive continues through the Dades Gorge, with stops for photos at the winding switchbacks and the rock formations known as “Monkey Fingers.” You’ll spend the night at a cosy inn in the Dades Valley.

Day 4: Dades Valley to Ouarzazate – Roses & Kasbahs

After breakfast, explore the Valley of the Roses, tucked between Dades and M’Gouna. For centuries, rose bushes have been cultivated here at 1,500 metres; the purest rose waters and oils are distilled in local cooperatives. It’s a good place to shop for something genuinely local.

The road then snakes through the Skoura oasis, where fortified earthen mansions – kasbahs – stand among palm groves. You’ll stop for a walk through this historic village before continuing to Ouarzazate. The city is famous as a film backdrop (Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, Babel). Dinner is in town, with time for an evening stroll before settling into your lodge.

Day 5: Aït Ben Haddou to Marrakech – Ancient Ksar & High Atlas

After an early breakfast, drive a short distance to Aït Ben Haddou, the UNESCO‑listed ksar. A local guide walks you through the narrow alleys of this 500‑year‑old fortified village, explaining how Berber tribes built it to defend against invaders. You’ll recognise the backdrop from Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and The Mummy.

From there, the road climbs into the High Atlas via the Tizi‑n‑Tichka pass. At 2,260 metres, it’s the highest paved crossing in North Africa. There are stops for photos, roadside minerals, and a chance to stretch your legs at the summit. The descent brings you into the red‑earth plains outside Marrakech. After a late lunch, you’re dropped at your riad or the airport – the tour ends, but the memories don’t.

• Long driving days – Day 1 and Day 5 are the longest stretches (7‑8 hours with stops). Charge devices, download offline entertainment, and bring snacks. Your driver knows every good roadside café along the way.
• Desert camp packing – For Night 2 in the dunes, pack a small backpack with essentials (toiletries, headlamp, change of clothes, warm layer). Your main luggage stays in the vehicle. Our Sahara packing list covers everything.

• Cash – ATMs are scarce between Merzouga and Ouarzazate. Withdraw enough dirhams in Fes or Midelt for tips, souvenirs, and roadside snacks.
