Akchour Waterfalls – Everything You Need To Know

Having hiked the Akchour Waterfalls multiple times, I can confidently say it’s one of the most rewarding experiences in Morocco. Whether you’re a nature lover or looking for a peaceful escape from the hustle of Chefchaouen, Akchour Valley has everything; it has super refreshing waterfalls, astonishing nature, and a nature-made bridge called God’s Bridge. I will break down everything you need to know about this beautiful destination and answer some of your critical questions about visiting.

How Long is the Akchour Hike?

The hike to the Akchour Waterfalls and God’s Bridge is moderate, but it’s worth every step. The total trail is about 2 to 3 hours one way, depending on your pace and the number of stops you take along the way. If you only hike to the smaller waterfall, you can get there in about 20 to 30 minutes. But for those who want to reach God’s Bridge, it’s a bit more challenging, taking around 2 hours with some steeper sections.

So bring sturdy hiking shoes, plenty of water and snacks to fuel your journey. Starting the hike early in the morning is essential to avoid the midday heat and crowd, especially during summer.

Is Akchour Waterfalls Worth It?

In one word: Absolutely! Akchour is a must-see place when visiting Chefchaouen; It offers some of the region’s most beautiful landscapes. The waterfalls alone are stunning, and reaching God’s bridge is like stepping into a natural wonder. I love the tranquility of this place, far from the tourist-heavy streets of Chefchaouen.

If you enjoy being surrounded by nature, Akchour is worth adding to your travel itinerary. It’It’sso an excellent spot for photography, with clear blue waters coming from between the mountains, creating the perfect backdrop.

How Much is a Taxi from Chefchaouen to Akchour?

Getting from Chefchaouen to Akchour is easy. You can take a shared taxi from Chefchaouen or hire a private one. I’ve done both. A shared taxi usually doesn’t cost too much; it can be around 30 to 50 MAD per person one way, but be prepared for a bit of a wait until the taxi fills up with other passengers.

But if you prefer convenience and a more direct trip. A private taxi will cost you around 200 to 300 MAD for the entire vehicle. It’s definitely worth the extra expense if you want a hassle-free experience and the flexibility to leave whenever you are ready.

Can You Swim in Akchour Waterfalls?

Yes, you can swim in the Akchour Waterfalls, and let me tell you, the water is incredibly refreshing! After a long hike, dipping into the cool and clear pools feels fantastic. The water is naturally cold since it comes from the mountains, so be prepared for a bit of a chill. However, in the summer months, it’s the perfect way to cool off.

I recommend bringing a towel and water shoes, as the rocks can be slippery near the waterfalls. Swimming here is a highlight for many visitors, and it’s a great way to relax after the hike.+

Akchour Restaurant – Where To Eat

When visiting Akchour, you don’t have to worry about packing a lunch! There are restaurants located right outside the entrance, near the parking lot, offering a great spot to fuel up before or after your hike. As you walk along the path to the waterfalls, you’ll come across even more small eateries along the way. Some of these restaurants are incredibly unique, with tables set right in the water, so you can dip your feet in the cool stream while enjoying your meal!

Most of these places are run by the local Berber community and serve traditional Moroccan dishes like tajine, along with mint tea and other drinks. It’s a perfect way to relax and immerse yourself in the local culture after your hike to the waterfalls or God’s Bridge.

The Best Way to Experience Akchour

If it’s your first time visiting Akchour, I highly recommend getting a guide. While the trail is mostly straightforward, there are sections where it can be tricky to navigate, and having a local guide can ensure you don’t get lost. Guides often know the best spots for photos or great spots you might miss alone.

On my first visit, I decided to hike alone. While it was great, the time I went with a guide made the experience much more prosperous and easier; especially when learning about the history and significance of God’s bridge to the local community.
