Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Middle Atlas to Desert
The first day is jam-packed full of travel and sight-seeing through the Middle Atlas mountains. By mid-morning, you’ll be surprised to arrive in what appears to be a Swiss village tucked into ancient cedar and oak forests. In this small city called Ifrane, we’ll stop to enjoy the scenery and play around with its naughtiest locals, the world’s largest population of Barbary Macaques. These monkeys are endangered and this part of the Middle Atlas range is one of the only places in the world where you can see them. Their favorite hang out is an 800 year old Cedar tree. Our travels continue further through the Middle Atlas, passing spectacular scenery and ever-changing landscapes. On the other side of the mountains is our destination for the night, a boutique hotel abutting the sand dunes of Merzouga. We’ll enjoy a regional delicacy for dinner called Medfouna before crashing into a soft bed for a well-earned night of sleep.
Day 2: Sahara Desert & Oases
Wake up to a fragrant Moroccan breakfast of mint tea, a varitey of handmade breads and Moroccan-style pancakes, olives, jams, soft cheese, and local honey. Your morning will be spent exploring the geology of the area of Merzouga and learning about the culture and traditional ways of the nomadic Berber tribes. You’ll realize that not much as changed in this area for centuries. If you prefer to explore Merzouga by quad or 4×4, your guide can arrange this also. Our morning concludes with lunch and a walk in an oasis, a grove of date palms springing to life around a fresh water source in the middle of an arid region of Merzouga. Back at the hotel, you’ll have an opportunity to pack up and charge your camera in preparation for one of the most spectacular evenings of your life. Our one and half our dromedary trek will take us through the sea of sand. As far as the eye can see, nothing but orange waves will surround us. Our destination is a comfy campsite in the middle of the desert. You’ll spend the night in warm canvas tents or perhaps you’ll choose to sleep under the stars in a nest of blankets and a pillow of sand.
Day 3: Gorges & Kasbahs
Day three begins at the break of dawn and the bellows of dromedaries. You’ll hike to the top of a sand dune to watch the sky morph through every color of the spectrum. Getting down from the top of the dune is much easier than getting up: Stop, drop, and roll. Pack a granola bar because your efforts have already earned you a little pre-breakfast snack on top of your dromedary while your caravan saunters back to the hotel lodge’s breakfast buffet. After plenty of mint tea, we’ll wind our way to the top of the the Todra Gorge pass. 300 meters below, the crystal river snakes toward the Ourzazate, palm groves springing up along its path. Lunch is served river-side and perhaps you’ll be brave enough to stick your feet in the freezing cold mountain water. The afternoon will pass tranquilly, driving through incredible scenery and stopping occasionally to snack, road-side shop, and take some great shots at lookout points in Dades Gorge. Tonight, you’ll tuck in at a homey inn for a peaceful evening and rest.
Day 4: Valleys to Ouarzazate
The next morning after breakfast, you’ll discover the secrets of Dades Valley. In a secret valley between Dades and M’Gouna, the aptly named Valley of the Roses is blooming. For at least six centuries, roses bushes have been cultivated 1500 meters above sea level. Shopping is in order as this is where the purest rose waters are distilled for use in all kinds of skin care products. Along the snaking roads of the gorge, hundreds of fortified mansions are carved into the cliffs. These ‘Kasbahs’ were built by Berbers to protect from invaders. Lunch will be served hovering over the recipe of the gorge. Your afternoon will be spent on a hike through the historic village of Skoura. This earthen fortified town was build where the mountain streams converge into a river basin, bursting with palm groves and flora. Your trip continues onward to Ouarzazate, a town famous for being the backdrop of well-known films such as ‘Gladiator’, ‘The Hills Have Eyes’, and ‘Babel’, and ‘Lawrence of Arabia’. You’ll have dinner in this cinematic city and probably dream in color at your lodge for the night.
Day 5: Visit Berbers & Marrakech
Have an early breakfast and then head out to your first stop, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Ksar Ait Ben Haddou. There are many ‘Ksar’ throughout this region of pre-Saharan Morocco. Berber tribes fled regions of Morocco that were conquered by invading Arab armies. They built earthen villages specifically designed and fortified to protect against these armies. You’ll enjoy a guided tour of the village and learn much about it’s 500 year history. This city is also well known as the set of many of your favorite films. After your guided tour of the Ksar, you’ll follow the path of the Berbers as they fought to maintain their way of life and evade an ever-colonizing Morocco. The Tizi-n-Tichka is a serpentine pass that takes you over the Atlas mountains at 2260 meters above sea level. Marrakesh awaits on the other side of the pass. We’ll have a late lunch before ensuring you are checked in at one of the gorgeous Riads or hotels of Morocco’s most exciting city.
